The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) sends more than 2000 Americans each year to teach English in Japanese elementary, junior and senior high schools. The teachers, who call themselves JETs, are generally young people who have just graduated from college who commit to spending at least one year in Japan. The program was started by the Japanese government in 1987, and it requires JETs not only to teach but to immerse themselves in the communities where they live and to share American culture.
When the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan on March 11th, many JET alumni acted immediately to help. Amanda Aldag was a JET from 2001-2004 and then worked for the JET program in the U.S. for several years. She says many alumni fundraising efforts are underway:
